What is a marketing data warehouse?

A marketing data warehouse holds ad, analytics and CRM data in one place you own. What goes in it, how it is built, and when you need one.

A marketing data warehouse is a database that holds your ad platform, analytics and CRM data in one place you own, modelled so the sources can be compared and joined. Dashboards read from the warehouse instead of from each platform, so every report starts from the same numbers.

What goes into it

  • Ad platforms: spend, impressions, clicks and reported conversions from Google, Meta, LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads.
  • Web analytics: GA4 sessions and events, usually through its BigQuery export.
  • CRM: contacts, deals, stages, close dates and values from HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho, GoHighLevel, monday CRM or similar.

The CRM is the part most reporting setups leave out, and the part that turns platform claims into revenue.

How it is built

Data is extracted from each source on a schedule and loaded into the warehouse, either by a connector or by custom pipelines. It is then modelled in layers:

  • Staging: each source cleaned and renamed into a consistent shape.
  • Intermediate: sources joined and deduplicated, for example one record per conversion instead of one per platform claim.
  • Marts: the final tables dashboards read from, such as channel performance and attribution.

Tests run before anything publishes, so a broken source shows up as a failed check rather than a wrong number on a dashboard.

Where it lives

BigQuery, Snowflake and PostgreSQL are the common choices. Marketing data volumes are usually modest, so the deciding factors are cost, who owns the account, and who will maintain it. We build on Postgres or Supabase in the client's own account.

When you need one

  • You run several ad platforms and need them compared on the same basis.
  • You need ad data joined to CRM deals to see what actually closed.
  • You want history the platforms no longer keep, or data you own if a tool or agency changes.

When you don't

If you run one or two channels and the platforms' own reports answer your questions, a warehouse adds cost and maintenance without much benefit. A connector into a dashboard tool may be enough; see Supermetrics alternatives for that trade-off.

Questions people ask

What is a marketing data warehouse?

A database that holds your ad platform, analytics and CRM data in one place, modelled so the sources can be compared and joined. Dashboards read from it instead of from each platform.

Which database should a marketing data warehouse use?

Common choices are BigQuery, Snowflake and PostgreSQL. For most marketing teams the volume is modest, so cost, ownership and who will maintain it matter more than raw performance.

When don't you need a marketing data warehouse?

If you run one or two channels, don't need ad data joined to CRM deals, and the platforms' own reports answer your questions, a warehouse adds cost without much benefit.
