Looker Studio vs a data warehouse for marketing

Looker Studio and a marketing data warehouse do different jobs. When Looker Studio alone is enough, when a warehouse pays off, and how they work together.

The short answer: Looker Studio is a free tool for building reports and charts. A data warehouse is where your data is stored, cleaned and joined. They are not rivals. Looker Studio alone is fine for simple reporting on a few channels. A warehouse becomes worth it when you need to reconcile several platforms against your CRM, keep history, or own the data. Often you use both, with Looker Studio reading from the warehouse.

They do different jobs

  • Looker Studio is the visual layer: charts, tables and shareable reports. It reads data from connectors and from databases.
  • A warehouse is the storage and modelling layer: raw data from every source, cleaned and joined into tables that agree with each other.

Comparing the two is like comparing a window to the building behind it. The more useful question is what the report reads from. See what a marketing dashboard should actually show you.

When Looker Studio alone is enough

  • You run a few channels and mostly need to see spend, clicks and conversions together.
  • Platform-reported numbers are good enough, and nobody needs them reconciled against the CRM.
  • The data volume is small, and reports load quickly.
  • You have no need to keep history beyond what each platform stores.

For that, a free connector-based report is a sensible start. Spending more on infrastructure before you need it would be a mistake.

When a warehouse is worth it

  • Reconciliation. You need ad platforms, analytics and CRM numbers to agree, and platform claims checked against closed revenue.
  • Joins and custom logic. Blending data across sources inside a report is limited and can get slow. A warehouse does the joining once, properly.
  • History. Platforms keep limited history and restate numbers. A warehouse keeps your own record.
  • Ownership. The data sits in an account you control, whichever tool you use next.
  • Speed. Reports read from prepared tables instead of calling several connectors each time.

Using both

Looker Studio can read from a warehouse such as BigQuery, and from databases like PostgreSQL through its connectors. In that setup the warehouse does the heavy work and Looker Studio shows the result. That is a good pattern when your team already likes Looker Studio and you want the numbers underneath to be right. How we build the warehouse side is on our Data and BI page, and the reasoning is in what a marketing data warehouse is.

How to choose

  • One or two channels, platform numbers are fine: start with Looker Studio on connectors.
  • Several channels with overlapping claims: add a warehouse and reconcile to the CRM.
  • You want the data in your own account regardless of tools: build the warehouse first.
  • Unsure: run an audit first to see how far apart your numbers really are.

The free data audit will show whether the gap justifies a warehouse, and the Supermetrics alternatives guide covers the connector side.

Questions people ask

Is Looker Studio a data warehouse?

No. It is a reporting and visualisation tool. It reads data from other places, such as connectors or a warehouse.

Is Looker Studio free?

Looker Studio itself is free to use, though some connectors that feed it cost money, and the underlying data storage you connect to may have costs.

Can Looker Studio connect to a data warehouse?

Yes. It can read from databases and warehouses such as BigQuery and PostgreSQL, which is a common way to combine its reports with reconciled data.

Do I need a warehouse if I use Looker Studio?

Not if your reporting is simple and platform numbers are enough. You need one when you must reconcile platforms against your CRM or keep your own history.

Why is my Looker Studio report slow?

Reports that blend several connectors, or that read large datasets directly, can be slow. Pointing the report at prepared tables in a warehouse usually helps.
