Google Ads offline conversions from your CRM
How to send qualified leads and closed deals from your CRM back to Google Ads using the click ID, and what to plan around.
The short answer: Google Ads offline conversions let you report what happened after the lead, such as a qualified lead or a closed deal, back to the ad that brought it in. You save the Google click ID (GCLID) with each lead, store it in your CRM, and send it back with the event name, time and value when the lead reaches a chosen stage. Google can then optimise toward customers, not form fills.
Why send CRM outcomes to Google Ads
Google Ads can only see what happens online. A form fill looks the same whether the lead is a perfect fit or a student. Without the CRM outcome, bidding learns to find more form fills, which are often cheap and low quality. Sending back qualified leads and closed deals teaches the account which clicks turn into revenue. For the wider picture, read what offline conversion tracking is.
How it works, step by step
- 1. Turn on auto-tagging in Google Ads, so each ad click adds a GCLID to the landing page address.
- 2. Capture it. A small script on your site reads the GCLID from the address and saves it, so it survives navigation to the form page. The form carries it in a hidden field.
- 3. Store it in the CRM. Create a field for the GCLID on the lead or contact record, and make sure it carries over when a lead becomes a contact or a deal.
- 4. Define the stages. Choose which stage changes count as conversions, such as qualified lead and closed-won, and create a matching conversion action in Google Ads for each.
- 5. Send each event back. When a record reaches a stage, upload the GCLID, the conversion action name, the time and, for deals, the value and currency.
- 6. Review the import report. Google reports how many uploads matched and why others failed.
Ways to send the data
- Manual upload. Export a file and upload it on a schedule. Fine for a start, but slow and easy to forget.
- Scheduled file import. Google Ads can fetch a file from a Google Sheet or a secure server on a schedule.
- An integration or automation tool. Some CRMs and automation platforms can send stage changes to Google Ads. Check what your plan supports.
- The Data Manager API. Google's help page says offline conversion imports and enhanced conversions for leads uploads are being migrated to the Data Manager API from 15 June 2026, and blocked in the Google Ads API for developers who were not already using them. Existing integrations were allowed to carry on while they migrate. For new automatic, monitored uploads, which is what we build when a client needs reliability, use the Data Manager API, and check Google's current help page for the latest rules.
Rules to plan around
- Google limits how long after the click a conversion can still be imported. Check the current window and upload often, not in big late batches.
- Each conversion needs the right time, and the account time zone matters.
- Send values and currency for deals so bidding can use them, and keep currencies consistent.
- Avoid sending the same event twice. Use one source for each conversion action.
- Leads that arrive without a GCLID, by phone or email, can sometimes be matched with hashed contact details instead. Google calls this enhanced conversions for leads, and its help page presents it as the recommended option over a standard import. Only use it with a lawful basis and consent; see POPIA and marketing tracking.
- Some browsers and devices use different click identifiers. Capture those too where Google supports them.
What goes wrong
- The GCLID is never captured, so there is nothing to send.
- The field is not carried over when a lead is converted, so the deal has no GCLID.
- Stage names differ across teams, so the wrong events are sent.
- Uploads fire late, after the allowed window.
- The same conversion is counted from both an import and a tag; see GA4 vs Google Ads conversions.
By CRM
The principle is the same everywhere, but each CRM stores fields and triggers events differently. Read the version for yours: HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho CRM and GoHighLevel. We build and monitor this as part of our CRM integration and Google Ads work.
Questions people ask
What are Google Ads offline conversions?
Conversions that happen after the click and away from your website, such as a qualified lead or a closed deal in your CRM, imported back into Google Ads and matched to the ad click.
What is a GCLID?
The Google click ID. Auto-tagging adds it to the landing page address when someone clicks an ad, and it identifies that click when you import the conversion.
Can I import conversions without a GCLID?
Sometimes. Google can match on hashed email or phone through enhanced conversions for leads, but a captured click ID is the more reliable link.
How often should I upload?
Often enough to stay inside Google's allowed window after the click, and ideally automatically, daily, rather than in occasional batches.
Do I need a developer?
Not always. Manual and scheduled file uploads need none, and some CRMs have native options. Automatic, monitored uploads through the Data Manager API usually do.
